Where it all began
Like so many others, our mold journey began without us even realizing it.
Hidden behind the walls of our home, under vanities, and in unsuspecting corners, mold was thriving—silently spreading into our air and affecting our family’s health.
In late 2022, we purchased Alivia’s childhood home with plans to remodel it into our forever home. Almost immediately after moving in, Alivia began experiencing respiratory issues. We assumed it was due to the old carpet and general dustiness of the house. Mold wasn’t even on our radar—after all, we couldn’t see any.
That changed quickly. While mounting a TV, Nik opened a wall behind the fireplace and discovered drywall covered in mold from floor to ceiling. On the other side of that wall? Our living room. That moment became the foundation for what would eventually become Pure Home.
We hired multiple remediation companies, only to be disappointed time and time again by their lack of thoroughness and safety protocols. Despite their efforts—and air quality tests that came back “within acceptable limits”—Alivia’s symptoms persisted. And so did our gut feeling that something still wasn’t right.
So we took matters into our own hands.
We studied the IICRC S520 protocols for proper mold remediation, watched hours of expert content, and invested in our own equipment—air scrubbers, HEPA vacuums, and everything else we needed to do it ourselves. The several thousand dollars we spent was well worth the peace of mind that came with knowing it was done right.
We tackled the job head-on: removing drywall, insulation, and every previously wet material affected by mold. We documented the entire process for our 4 million followers on social media (@NikandLiv.DIY), and the response was overwhelming. Thousands of people reached out with stories just like ours. It quickly became clear that mold is a much bigger issue than most people realize.
That response sparked a deep passion in both of us. Over the next few years, we helped family and friends navigate their own mold situations and completed or consulted on several additional remediation projects.
In January 2025, we knew it was time to take our mission to the next level—and Pure Home was officially born.
Nik pursued advanced training through the American Mold & Moisture Association and became a Certified Environmental Mold Assessor and Remediator. During our research, we also discovered InstaScope—an advanced air quality testing instrument that provides real-time, on-site results and allows for full-home testing, rather than just small, isolated air samples like traditional spore trap testing.
This technology, combined with our hands-on experience and Nik’s inspection expertise, is what sets Pure Home apart.
We started Pure Home to help others find what we were searching for: real answers, accurate testing, detailed and unbiased reporting, and safe, health-focused solutions to mold problems.
And now, we’re honored to walk with other families on their own path toward a healthier home.
